Publication Ethics and Editorial Policies
AVES journals adhere to guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), European Association of Science Editors (EASE), World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and Council of Science Editors (CSE).
We regularly provide the necessary guidance and training for editors, writers, reviewers, and publication staff to ensure full compliance with the international academic publishing standards.
Peer Review
Manuscripts submitted to AVES journals are peer reviewed by a team of experienced independent experts.
In each journal, the peer review process is managed by an independent editorial board. The editor-in-chief, who is appointed by the journal’s home organization, selects the members of his/her editorial team.
Each submission goes through an initial screening process wherein editors have the option to reject manuscripts without further review. Manuscripts that are approved for peer review are assigned to a handling editor, who works with a team of external reviewers.
A double-blind peer review, wherein identities of the authors and reviewers are not disclosed to one another, is conducted by all AVES journals.
Final decisions are based on the recommendations of the reviewers and the handling editor, with the final approval from the journal’s editor-in-chief.
All appeals and complaints are handled by the editorial board of each journal, under the scope of COPE guidelines. An ombudsperson may be assigned to resolve any cases that cannot be internally resolved by the journal’s editorial board.
Conflict(s) of Interest
AVES journals require all individuals involved in the peer review process to disclose any existing or potential conflict(s) of interest, including financial, personal, ideological, and academic issues that may lead to any bias.
All authors and co-authors are required to submit the ICMJE’s Potential Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form.
Editors and reviewers are also encouraged to disclose any conflict(s) of interest regarding the submissions assigned to them.
Plagiarism
Throughout the evaluation and publication processes, manuscripts submitted to AVES journals are screened (multiple times) for plagiarism by using Crossref Similarity Check (iThenticate).
If it is detected that the submitting authors have plagiarized a portion or the entire manuscript, the editorial board handling the manuscript will act in accordance with the relevant COPE guidelines.
Misconduct
In the event of alleged/suspected research misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, citation manipulation, and data falsification/fabrication), AVES journals will act in accordance with the relevant COPE guidelines.
Copyright Policy and Open Access
The archives of all AVES journals are available online and free of charge.
The content of the journals are licensed under various copyright formats, including the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License, which allows third parties to share and adopt the content.
Although the content of some journals are licensed with a traditional copyright, they will still be available online and free of charge.
Publication Fees
As AVES journals are open access publications, authors are not charged any submission or publication fee.
The publication expenses are covered through the financial resources of each journal’s home institution, with occasional support from the journal’s advertisement revenue.
Accepted articles are usually published between 4 and 12 weeks. However, a fee may be charged for manuscripts that are published ahead of the usual publication schedule.
Archiving Policy
The content published by AVES journals is electronically preserved by using PubMed Central and Portico to ensure its availability to scientists and researchers in the future.
We are planning to have all AVES journals archived through Portico by the end of 2019.
Advertising Policy
Although each AVES journal is financially supported by the journal’s home institution, a limited number of drug/medical products and hardware/software advertisements may be presented.
Advertisement sales and editorial workflow processes are separated from one another to secure editorial independency and to mitigate any influences from financial interests.
The published advertisements are clearly marked and easily distinguishable from the editorial content.
It is the advertisers’ responsibly to ensure that their advertisements are in accordance with the governing laws regarding content and ethical issues that are deceiving and/or offensive.
